Lucie Lacava
Founder, Media Design Consultant
Lucie held held the position of Art Editor at the the Montreal Gazette before founding her company Lacava Design Inc. in 1992. Lacava’s body of work includes more than 100 print and digital projects across five continents.
In 2010 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for News Design in Denver Colorado. She has received more than 100 international awards in her career. Among the most prestigious are: the “World's Best Designed Newspaper" ten times collectively to Le Devoir, Le Soleil, and the National Post, the Best of Show award for Le Devoir and two Judge's Special Recognition awards for Le Soleil and the National Post from The Society for News Design.
Among the most recent projects, are The East African, The Nation, both in Kenya, and The Straits Times (ST), the English-language flagship daily of SPH, swept seven awards at the Asian Media Awards 2017, including Gold for Best Newspaper Overall Design two years running since the redesign in 2015.
Lucie has been published in critical books, including Contemporary Newspaper Design (Mark Batty Publisher), Visions of the Newspaper of the Future (American Press Institute), the World Association of Newspapers report "New Designs, New Formats”, and most recently contributed a chapter to, Digital Fonts and Reading, Edited by: Mary C Dyson (University of Reading, UK), Ching Y Suen (Concordia University).
Lacava’s professional contributions include past presidency of the Society for News Design (2001). She is a founding member of the francophone chapter of SND/Fr.
Lacava served as a judge for the following organizations:
WAN-IFRA, Asia Media Awards; CNNA, The Canadian National Newspaper Awards; SND, The Society for News Design; SPD, The Society of Publication Designers; The Malofiej Awards for Infographics; ATypI, Association Typographique Internationale; Best of GateHouse Media.
Additionally, Lacava lectures frequently around the world on the topics of editorial design and typography, a practice that is facilitated by her fluency in four languages. She has lectured at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, the American Press Institute, IFRA, and as a visiting faculty member at the Universidad Catolica de Chile.
Most recently she was invited to create a digital news application, as part of an R&D project co-chaired by Columbia University and The Poynter Institute for Media Studies. She was also an active member of the local committee helping organize the ATypI 2017 Montreal conference.
Since 2013 she is a part-time lecturer at l’Université du Québec à Montreal, UQAM.

Senior Designer
Lulu Conchita Galway, joined Lacava Design Inc. in September 2007. Her responsibilities include the research, design and implementation of new projects including the development of styleguides for print and digital platforms. She is also responsible for the hiring of freelance contributors.
Some of the major projects she has collaborated on are The National, "m" magazine and Al Ittihad, all in the U.A.E. Other projects include the re-branding of Brunswick News, HERE weekly, the award winning L’Étoile, and The Straits Times in Singapore. Her most recent projects include the complete redesign of the Telegraph-Journal website look and feel, starting with the dedicated mobile version.
Her wildest experience comes from working for director Peter Jackson on the epic trilogy The Lord of the Rings. Designing elven war banners and hobbit paraphenalia. She has spent much of her career hopping between Canada, the UK and New Zealand and has built up an extensive experience in the book publishing industry. Lulu holds Bachelors degrees in both Studio Fine Arts and Graphic Design. She also maintains a fine arts practice.
